Do you know Avid Pro Tools? Nope ? Really ? Well it’s not too late to catch up on that!
Pro Tools software, developed in the late 80s by AVID Technology (formerly Digidesign) is a digital audio workstation (DAW), used by most audio professionals, whether in the recording and mixing studio , or in audiovisual post production. One of the first albums to be recorded, edited and mixed entirely on Pro Tools was Summer in Paradise by the BeachBoys in 1992.
Pro Tools is a family of software offering both a professional tool using DSP cards and different hardware interfaces, and lighter versions more accessible to the general public, such as the Mbox (the calculations are then made internally by the processor (CPU ) from the computer).
AVID has also developed the video editing side of the Pro Tools software: Avid Media Composer, also an essential reference in the audiovisual field.
Like a baker with his flour, you will have to use Pro Tools at least once during your career as a sound engineer, not only because it is essential, but also for the diversity of its functionalities, which offer comfort on our workflow.
Moreover, if you want to be a real pro, it is very useful to create Pro Tools templates, they will allow you to make, for example, your recording sessions efficient and organized, without wasting time.
Do you want to acquire or just test Pro Tools? There are several versions of the software, the perpetual license, if you are sure you want to start using the software, or the annual subscription licenses, if you only need the software for a specific period of time, if you work on a collaborative project for example.
Have you ever wondered how the idea of creating a voice corrector came about?
Well, during a meal with friends!
Andy Hildebrand, an American engineer, developed during his career a tool to analyze seismic data.
Once retired, during a dinner with friends around the year 1996, his wife, who loves to sing, puts forward the idea that it would be incredible if a tool could make it possible to sing more just for her and her friends.
The idea was born. Andy Hildebrand takes it into his head to transform his seismic analysis software to create the first voice corrector.
A seismologist who is revolutionizing the music industry. Incredible isn’t it?
Antares AutoTunes is therefore historically the first vocal corrector that helps to sing in tune.
Like any new innovation, AutoTunes does not escape its own drift, its use sometimes pushed to the extreme gave birth to the Auto-Tune effect (often confused with the vocoder for that matter).
Adjusted to the extreme, the software makes the voice artificial and metallic. Practice popularized by Cher and rapper T-Pain, and also Kanye West in the 2000s.
Whatever you think, Auto-Tune revolutionized the music industry by giving the ability to sing in tune to all artists around the world.
But few use it in the studio as it should. Because it is not enough to launch the software for a pan voice to suddenly become that of Celine Dion!
The sound engineer must know the key on which you will sing and adjust the software according to this, generally using an instrument that he has available in his studio (guitar, piano).
Nowadays, Auto-Tune is everywhere, some have made it their trademark like Drake or Travis Scott and use it as an instrument in its own right. That’s lit!
Every year since 2019, we’ve been going to the NAMM Show (National Association of Music Merchants) 4-day convention in Anaheim, CA. This huge and unmissable music industry event (+200,000 people per session) did not take place in 2021, due to COVID.
And the 2022 edition has been postponed to June instead of January originally.
As a plugin and software distributor, it is essential for us to participate in this type of event, since we discover all the new audio practices and technologies there, and many meetings between professionals are organized.
So we went to Anaheim.
Were present from the team: – Leroy Chambers, sound engineer, music production and mixing trainer and CEO of PluginMasters – Anne Laure Gautherot, studio manager, training coordinator and COO of PluginMasters – Luc Loncelle, sound engineer, music production trainer and Tech Specialist for PluginMasters – Anaka, our photographer, to whom we owe it to the superb photos that you find in this article.

This was an opportunity for us to perpetuate our partnerships and of course to negotiate new ones. As for example, we met with the teams of Antares, Kilohearts, Slate Digital, Soundtoys, Polyverse, Avid.. and a lot more partners that spent time with us demonstrate their latests products.
Some of our audio plugins partners regularly present at NAMM include: AVID, Steinberg, Antares, IK Multimedia, Audio-Technica, Native Instruments, Arturia, UAD, Soundtoys, Fabfilter, Joué, Soultones, Music Marketing…and many more to come !

This year, several sound behemoths were not present on the stands, but we have no doubt that given the success of this reduced edition, they will be there for the April 2023 edition, at least we hope so!
On the evening and night of June 8, 2022, the team of PluginsMasters was at East-West studios in Los Angeles doing various art projects, with our sound engineers and trainers Leroy and Luc handling the sound, and Anaka doing the photography and videos.
So I suggest you a little visit….
For the record, East-West Studio, located on Hollywood Boulevard in L.A, is where the biggest stars came to record: Micheal Jackson, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Justin Timberlake, U2, Iggy Pop, Muse, The Rolling Stones, or more recently, Travis Scott and Coldplay.
There are a total of 5 studios in the complex, all intended to produce established artists. We booked Studio One, which was the birthplace of Michael Jackson’s Thriller album, among other things!
What were we doing in East-West? Well we recorded, of course!
First, to get the ball rolling, we recorded a new track from up-and-coming r’n’b artist from Los Angeles, Akta The equipment used for recording is as follows: Telefunken ELA-M 251 for voice, Custom 80 Channel Neve 8078 console, Teletronix LA-2A.
To respect the quality of the material on which we started the project, we will perform the analog mixing of the title when we return to our studio, Shaman Studio, at the beginning of July.
Then, we continued with the production of two videos on beatmaking and sound synthesis (we are a training center after all!) with our plugins partners Blue Cat Audio and Martinic, whose products you can find on the website.
And finally, after dark, we recorded Californian pianist Dave Lafferty, with a full setup of AEA Ribbon Mics and preamps, since the brand’s creator, Wes Dooley, (whom we had met at NAMM a few days before ) was with us in the studio!
We hope you enjoyed this little foray into one of the most famous studios in the world! Come and see us in the studio or in music production training so that we can tell you more about this experience!
